“This election, voters in Portland, Maine rejected unnecessary restrictions against short-term rentals by striking down a referendum banning non-owner occupied short-term rentals and increasing registration fees. Short-term rentals provide invaluable economic opportunities to communities — yielding supplemental revenue streams for residents and a larger customer base for local businesses. Studies have shown that consumers are largely choosing to stay in short-term rentals during this pandemic because they are private, clean, and reliable. It is no surprise voters recognize these benefits and swiftly defeated this referendum.”
